Theory & Hazard perception tests

theory test roomDriver training and test application procedure
Before you can apply for your driving test you must first pass your theory. Your intensive driving course though, can start any time BEFORE you take your theory. It is recommended that you study your theory whilst you are taking your lessons since quite a lot of theory will be covered in your lessons, especially the hazard perception part of the theory test. Full theory and hazard training is given as part of your driving lessons at no extra cost.
Warning! Do not take your theory test before your lessons if you are only taking one or two lessons a month. Your theory pass certificate is only valid for two years, which may seem a lot but due to 'life' getting in the way I know students who have had to pass their theory test more than once.
There is plenty of time to take your theory test, it really doesn't need to be taken more than a few weeks before you intend to take your driving test. Theory test waiting times are around 1-3 weeks, but you can get tests within 48 hours if you know how. Book your theory test online

Taking your theory test
The theory test is made up of two parts; the multiple choice part and the hazard perception part. The multiple choice part is delivered using a touch screen computer and mouse and the hazard perception part records your responses through the use of a computer mouse button.
You need to pass both parts to pass the theory test. If you pass one part and fail the other you will fail the whole test, and you will need to take both parts again.
The questions in each multiple choice test vary according to the category of vehicle you are hoping to obtain a licence for, i.e. a motorcycle theory test will contain specific questions that do not appear in any other test.
For the hazard perception part of the theory test there are no separate versions for different vehicles, each vehicle category takes the same test, however the pass mark is different for different categories of tests.

You will need a computer (check out bargain computers) spacer to practice your hazard perception test and complete your multiple choice questions for your theory test

Tip: 75% of your theory test questions will come from the Highway Code You can purchase a copy for less than £3. Alternatively go to the link shown for an online version.
The online version has the limitation in that you can't flick through a computer screen at random and you have a good chance of missing some vital information.

To become a good driver you will need to know the Highway Code inside out. Most students train completely wrong when it comes to theory training. Highway CodeTheory test study bookstheory books Because you are encouraged to buy the 'multiple choice' books on the market, you will tend to focus on that, instead of learning from the Highway Code.

Tip: Study the Highway Code first and then look at your multiple choice books. Guaranteed that if you understood the Highway Code you will get most of the multiple choice questions right first time.
