Eco diversion routes

Emergency diversion routes -

road closed? Where do you go?

When a motorway or other major road is closed due to either repairs or an accident you mau find it difficult to find your way when you are diverted off your main route on to side roads.

The Highways Agency are currently increasing the number of diversion routes to help you find your way. These eco diversion routes are designed to take you the most economical and safe way back onto your main route.

An unplanned diversion often meant that drivers were unexpectedly directed to leave the road without a clear diversion route. The Highways Agency are now working with local authorities to agree the most eco friendly suitable diversion route in advance. These are then signed, using one of the symbols shown below on a yellow background. Should be diverted you can simply follow one of these symbols and you will end up back on the road you were originally on.

The way the eco diversion routes work
Just suppose you are travelling from London to Glasgow and you are halfway along the M6 motorway when you see the signs to say that the motorway is closed 5 miles ahead. You can't stop on the motoway to read your map and you can't operate your sat. nav. What can you do?

Here is the eco diversion route method
You look out for a sign that says Glasgow and next to it you will see one of the symbols shown below. All you have to do now is follow the symbol that was next to the Glasgow sign and you will be directed back onto the M6 at the first available opportunity. You keep following your symbol, because you may not see a sign for Glasgow again until you are back onto the motorway. eco diversion routes sign post
