DSA driving test explained
First of all the letters DSA stand for Driving Standards Agency & they are the agency that is responsible for overseeing all tests of vehicles including both the theory test & practical driving tests. The driving examiner on your practical driving test is employed by the DSA and all professional driving instructors have to be registered with the DSA.
.
The driving test can be taken anytime after you have passed your theory test by law. In reality though you should not take your driving test until you are ready to pass it. Students get very excited when they pass their theory test, & quite rightly so, it is one step closer to their full driving licence. But most are a long way off passing their driving test, especially if the theory test has been taken to early. My best students complete enough driving lessons first in order to be confident about their driving lessons before they take their theory test.
They then complete both DSA tests successfully within a month. All of my students have a 100% chance to pass both theory & driving tests first time.
Suggestion: Do not take your driving test until you can drive safely & independently of your driving instructor
Your driving test is in 3 parts
- Show me tell me questions
- Road & traffic driving
- Manouvres
The driving test show me tell me questions are the first part of your test. You will be asked by the examiner two questions about the car vehicle checks you should carry out on a regular basis.
In the next part of your driving test you will be asked to start your car engine and move away safely. You can be asked in this move away process to either park your car into one of the driving test centre parking bays [if any exisit] or parallel park alongside a car parked on the road. That then would constute one of your manouvres.
If the driving test centre you are using has a car park then there are 4 manouvres you could be asked to complete.
1. Bay parking, 2. Parallel parking, 3. Corner reverse, 4, Turn in the road. In reality you will normally be asked to carry out only two manouvres, but there is nothing in the regulations to state that you cannot complete all 4. Over the last 5 years I have had 3 students who completed 3 manouvres and 1 student who completed all 4 manouvres.
The road & traffic driving forms the largest part of your driving test, including possibly an emergency stop [1 in 3 students will be asked to carry out an emergency stop].
At the end of your driving test you will be told the result and asked if you would like to know how you were marked, whether you pass or fail.
